My mostly wall hung oil painted sculptures are built, not carved. I use a system of cut and laminated wood, primarily maple, and the layers are glued together in a gradual build up. Once the glue is set, the pieces are sanded smooth and then the painting process begins. I paint in layers as well, the colors beneath the final surface give the finished work a richness. I often paint a fluorescent color on the back, so the piece gives off a slight “glow”, and I sometimes use metallic powder pigments mixed into the oils. The end work appears to be one cohesive piece, though made of MANY parts. I am inspired by nature and like to combine botanical and mechanical references together. I strive to make work that is positive and radiates with life and energy.
